The Monastery of Saint Raphael is located in the NE of the island, 3 km far from the village of Thermi. The Monastery was built on the ground where an early Christian Basilica stood. The history of the Monastery covers 3 periods: the 1st, from the 10th century to 1235, the second, from 1433 to 1463 – the year the Monastery was destroyed by the Turks; St. Raphael was the last Abbot of that period, and finally the third, from 1962 up to now.
